![]() They have previously had other quacks on the panel as well. We also find it problematic that their medical review panel includes not only legitimate doctors and psychologists, but also (at the time of writing) one practitioner of integrative medicine, which combines legit medical practice with pseudoscience and alternative medicine. They also have had articles for Vayarin (a medical food that is now no longer sold in the US because its research was bunk) that suspiciously looked like stealth advertisements (which is highly unethical and illegal in the US). Their website is full of articles promoting the use of homeopathy, reiki, and other unscientific quack practices. ![]() Links to and mentions of ADDitude are not allowed on /r/adhd because we feel they have demonstrated themselves to be untrustworthy and that they, despite soliciting donations from people with ADHD to fund their operation, prioritize profit and advertising dollars over our best interests. Reading is easier because words on a page stay put. If someone just comes up to me talking, I'll have to ask them to stop and start over again because if I'm not expecting words, my brain just lets them fly by without absorbing them. Our working memories are crap and so by the time we hear the next word, the previous word is gone. With languages you're less familiar with, until you're en route to becoming fluent you don't know where the word boundaries are, so it's extremely difficult to separate the words.Īudio processing disorder is definitely part of ADHD though. With your native language, you know where the word boundaries are, so it's easier to separate the words even when people are speaking faster than normal. But when I hear Spanish I can’t separate the words and have no clue what I am hearing. I only speak English, but made sooo much effort to to learn. Despite pouring out an anonymous confessional here on Reddit, I’m not the type of person to discuss personal things or seek out help, but I’m really glad I did. I recently sought pharmaceutical help for this and other ADHD issues and it’s helped me immensely. Lots and lots of alcohol can dull the background noise to a tolerable level and has helped me experience meaningful conversations with people. While others may to interpret this as me being “spaced out”, it’s actually an extremely stressful situation for me. Even though I’m truly putting forth the effort, I just can’t separate the conversation I’m supposed to be having from the other conversations that keep competing for my attention. If I’m having a conversation and another conversation is going on (or many, like in a restaurant or an office) they all turn into an overwhelming whirlpool of signals that drown out the conversation I’m trying to participate in. Can anyone relate? Not sure if this is related to Auditory Processing Disorder or what. The rest of that work day I notice I have an easier time getting tasks done and speaking up in conversations. Wondering… there are occasional “good” days when this isn’t such an issue - first thing I notice in the morning I am able to suddenly understand ALL of the lyrics to songs I’ve heard a 1000 times before. Later edit: so glad so many people can relate, and thanks for the great info and suggestions. ![]() If anyone can share helpful advice or therapy that helps that would be fantastic. For that reason I’ve always actively avoided those situations I have little social life because of it. I’m and adult (51yo) and never been able to hear the people next to me when there is a lot of background noise- loud restaurants, bars. I’m very curious if a lot of others here can relate I’m reading it is a common secondary issue with ADHD. So I just learned of this disorder and it fits 100% with my struggles trying to have conversations all my life I had been blaming it on my social anxiety.
